Round of 16 draw marred by controversy

The round of 16 draw for the Champions League should have been simple.

However, it was marred by controversy.

The initial draw saw some brilliant ties, including Manchester United vs PSG and Inter Milan vs Ajax, while Chelsea avoided several tricky sides and would have faced Lille.

However, not long after, trouble was brewing, as it emerged that UEFA had managed to leave Manchester United out of the pot of an earlier round, as can be seen below.

And now, UEFA have released a statement confirming that the draw will be re-done this afternoon.

Following a technical problem with the software of an external service provider that instructs the officials as to which teams are eligible to play each other, a material error occurred in the draw for the UEFA Champions League Round of 16.

But that hasn’t gone down well in Spain’s capital with Los Blancos.

Real Madrid slam “scandal” of a draw

Now, even before the announcement of a re-draw, Real Madrid were arguing that their tie should stand. They had drawn Benfica, therefore avoiding the likes of Paris Saint Germain, Chelsea and RB Salzburg.

However, they are, like everyone else, going to have to again await their fate, something that they consider scandalous.

As per Goal Espana:

The reason is that his pairing with Benfica was completely correct, with the errors taking place later. At the Bernabéu they consider that it is not logical that their tie is affected by what happened later and this has been made known firmly after the officiality.
